Cape Canaveral, Fla. (AP) – The landing of a spacecraft on the moon has long been a number of hits and misses.
Last year, a spaceship, which was built by intuitive machines via a program sponsored by NASA, brought the United States back onto the moon since the end of the Apollo program, but the lander taped on the side and worked briefly on the surface.
Now another US company – Firefly Aerospace – added its moonland to the winning list on Sunday and was the first private person to break through a fully successful moon landing.

Both US companies are part of NASA’s efforts to support the commercial deliveries for the moon later in this decade before astronaut missions.
The moon has littered with wrecks of failed landings over the years. An overview of the winners and losers of the moon:
First victory
Luna 9 of the Soviet Union successfully landed on the moon in 1966 after the predecessors rushed or missed the moon as a whole. The United States follows four months later with the surveyor 1. Both countries reach more robot landings, while the breed looks at landmen.
Apollo rules
In 1969, NASA stops the space race with the Soviets with a moon landing by Neil Armstrong from Apollo 11 and Buzz Aldrin. Twelve astronauts explore the surface over six missions before the program ends in 1972 with Apollo 17. The only country that sends people to the moon hopes to return to the surface a year after a moon flying from astronauts.
China appears
In 2013, China will be the third country that successfully lands on the moon and delivers a rover named Yutu, Chinese for Jade Rabbit. China follows the Yutu-2 Rover in 2019, this time the unexplored company of the Mondes-one ends up impressive first page. A rehearsal return on the nearby side of the moon in 2020 results in almost £ 4 (1.7 kilograms) moon rocks and dirt. Another mission of the rehearsal return from the other side in 2024 delivers stones and earth from the less researched part of the moon. China considered the largest moon competitor of NASA and wants to put his astronauts on the moon by 2030.
Russia stumbles
In 2023, Russia tries for its first moon landing in almost half a century, but the Luna 25-room vehicles hits the moon. The former country of the country – Luna 24 from 1976 – not only landed, but also returned moon rocks on earth.
India triumph on take 2
After his first country got into the moon in 2019, India Grouped Chandrayaan-3 (Hindi for Moon Craft) in 2023. The craft successfully puts on and turns India the fourth country to achieve a moon landing. The victory comes just four days after Russia’s crash country.
Japan lands sideways
Japan becomes the fifth country, which successfully lands on the moon and ends up his spaceship in January. The craft lands on the wrong side and compromises its ability to create solar energy, however, manages to turn off pictures and science before the long moon night uses.
Private moonland attempts
A privately financed country from Israel called Bersheet, Hebrew for “at the beginning”, plunged into the moon in 2019. The company of a Japanese entrepreneur, Isspace, starts a moonlander in 2023, but also it, wrecks.
Intuitive machines become the first private outfit that reaches a safe moon landing. The lander tipped over the side in 2024, but worked briefly with limited communication. Another US company – Astrobotic Technology – tried in the same year to send a country to the moon, but had to give up because of a fuel leak, finally returned to earth and burned over the Pacific.
This year there is another private rush to the moon after Firefly has landed Blue Ghost and delivers experiments for NASA. Intuitive machines and Isspace also plan more moon deliveries.
