Their goal is to provide science and technology from NASA as part of the 2.6 billion US dollar commercial Lunar Payoad Services initiative of the space agency.

According to Ryan Watkins, the NASA scientist, the program intends to bring more frequent missions to the moon.

“We really try to activate this sustainable lunar economy. Really build these companies to be able to make this kind of missions with NASA. And so you know by working with these companies, we can pay attention to up to two missions per year. “

On Wednesday, intuitive machines started his six-legged moonlander Athena on a SpaceX rocket.

It will land around March 6th near the southern pole of the moon, where the amount of water operations mandates and measures.

WATKINS: “… Here we are sending people as part of Artemis. And we would like to understand the resources that are available to us down there when we work for a longer period of human exploration.”

However, Watkins says that the ultimate goal is to achieve beyond the satellites of the earth.

“We learn as many technologies that we send to the moon surface, how we use it, and then we would ultimately want to use them when we proceed. So this is the ultimate goal on the moon and then on Mars.”
