President Prabowo Subianto wears a traditional Indonesian black hat and shirt and speaks in an Instagram video with the camera and asks his people how he can help them after his election last year.

“Who has not received help from me? What are your needs?” Prabowo seems to ask the audience in the clip published in November.

But while the mouth of the Indonesian leader and his eyes flash, the words he pronounces are part of a fraudulent Deepfake fraud, which was uncovered by the police last month, which the Indonesians cheated in 20 provinces.

Those who were committed by the message were asked to contact a WhatsApp number and to hand over between 250,000 and one million Rupiah ($ 15 to $ 60) as a “administrative fee” to receive help that never came about.

Since the Indonesian election of last year, experts have been warning of a flood wave of Deepfakes – audio, pictures and video that have come from a known person, who, however, are actually the work of fraudsters with artificial intelligence tools.

And the victims say that the jokes are so sophisticated that they also make others vulnerable to the fraud.

“People should be more careful. Don’t be easily fooled by the temptation of prices,” said the 56 -year -old Aryani, the scam of 200,000 Rupiah after seeing a deep papal video of a prominent Indonesian businessman.

“I need money, but instead I am asked to send money. You even made video calls with me as if I was talking to you directly.”

During the presidential campaign of the Southeast Asian country, Deepfake became an important instrument to spread misinformation both harmful and helpful for candidates.

But now that the technology has fallen into the hands of criminals who want to make cold, hard money.

The AFP factors found the report behind the Prabowo clip.

These videos also promote false financial help.

The police arrested a suspect that was 65 million Rupiah (4,000 US dollars) from fraud, said Himawan Bayu Aji, director of the Indonesian National Cyber Crime Unit in February.

He said that the officials had arrested a second person who was involved in another fraud who also used the DeepfaK technology without disclosing without the increased amount.

The examination of AFP Fact Check showed that the spread of such videos had a much greater reach than the two accounts announced by the police.

The President’s Deeppake Videos, a popular ex-general, circulated after the arrests, including dozens on Tikkok, with the hashtag “Prabowo shares blessed”.
